TONIGHT
Monday, Dec 3rd
Paris Je t’Aime by 18 Acclaimed Filmmakers
(preceded by “Scientists take off their lab coats” - Portrait of A Scientist)
8PM
Caspary Auditorium
Rockefeller University
1230 York Ave (and 66th St)
********************
Tonight, as the holidays approach, we present Paris Je t’aime - an ensemble of short films that brings together 18 international acclaimed directors. Paris Je t’aime is a collective ode to the magical, innately lyrical place of the city of lights. The result, while bursting with perhaps, a few too many stories is well worth a viewing for the performance and stories that are at once haunting, charming, relatable and life-affirming. Given only a few minutes to present their segment, each director spins their own Parisian love song within a different district of the sprawling city. The scenes are charming enough, especially with an omnipresent tinkling of French accordions in the background to give the film an airy, sentimental feeling; but love is not always sweet, and the stories that deftly examine non-romantic love, and even loss and longing, prove to be the most moving of the entire collection.
All screenings are held in Caspary Auditorium on Monday nights at 8 p.m. Admission is free and open to the Tri-Institutional community.
Guests and family members are welcome.

initiative, please email me at agambis@rockefeller.edu. The
initiative will continue all year long.
The latest Portrait Of A Scientist called “Scientists take off their lab coats”!!! is now available on Imaginal Disc Website. It features a few scientists who talk about their hours away from the bench.
Today, Melanie Wallace from NOVA came to give a talk at Rockefeller. It was a great success and I received a great deal of feedback from students, professors and other people within the Rockefeller community. The science and media lectures seem to generate a lot of interest and will therefore continue. The next talk is next year - Roald Hoffman from Columbia will speak about “Entertaining Science” - a cafe scientifique at the Cornelia Street Cafe where scientists come speak.
Dr. Eliene Augenbraum, Chief Executive/President, and Brad Kloza, News Director of the independent news source ScienCentral have agreed to collaborate on a series of shorts about “Scientists at Rockefeller University”. These “portraits of scientist” series which broadcasted on ScienCentral’s web news site and also at the Rockefeller Film Series screenings. The objective is to have a more personal view into the lives of researchers and scientists, have them guide us through their work, get to know them outside of work. These little vignettes will also highlight the connections between science & the city (that is New York City). We also plan within this collaboration to prepare more simple clips about different quirky themes of science. A few ideas are “strange laboratory objects”, “scientists and their bench”, “the bulletin boards”, and “a look into the incubators/refrigerators”. Samara Brown, technician in the lab and also former adviser on editing of the documentary “A Fruit Fly in New York” will be helping me in the process.
We will begin following the SURF (Summer Undegraduate Research Fellowhip) students at Rockefeller. Before shooting, a few details have to be settled.
1. I need to obtain a PIO approval for shooting at Rockefeller.
2. Send an email out to the SURF students.
3. For students interested in participating, I need to have them sign releases as to not have issues with appearances on a public film.
I am also very excited to announce that ScienCentral will be providing us with camera and edit gear. We will need to schedule a shoot date with Brad Kloza. We will be provided with a mini HDV-cam (which Dr. Augenbraun refers to as “the spy cam”) and the “sun gun” for lighting.
This is the first test for the science and film BLOG managed by Alexis Gambis from ImaginalDisc. This site will have weekly information on science and film projects both at Rockefeller University and in the broader NYC area. We will be announcing shortly the series “Portraits of a Scientist” produced in collaboration with ScienCentral, Inc. Also, we are currently looking for guest speakers to be part of the “Science and Media” lectures, a Rockefeller Film Series sponsored event.
